Santa Cruz Harbor Surge Aftermath

Posted in Event, Photography by daybf on April 27, 2011

This is long overdue, but better late than never. The Santa Cruz Harbor was hit with wave surges on March 11, 2011, after the terrible tsunami in Japan. We experienced nothing in comparison to Japan, but the surges caused an estimated $22.5 million in dock/infrastructure damages. And “at least 18 boats sank and another 100 were damaged by the waves” (abc local news article). There are a lot of clips of the surge on YouTube, but this one and these sum it up pretty well.

My dad has a sailboat in the harbor, so he went down on the day of, but it was ill advised, unsafe, and crowded, so I waited until the next day to go down and take some pictures of the aftermath. By the time I arrived they had already cleaned up a lot of the debris, but you can tell where boats and docks are damaged or missing.
