Exploring Downtown Portland

Posted in Photography, Travel by daybf on March 21, 2011

I frequented downtown Portland throughout my stay. On this particular day I took the streetcar downtown to catch a bus to get to the Hawthorne District. So, I took this opportunity to photograph some of the area while the weather was pretty nice.

I was surprised to see a bunch of seagulls flying around/searching for scraps of food. Below is the MAX passing by the pretty City Hall building.

The Portlandia statue crouches above the entrance of the Portland Building. The statue was built by Raymond Kaskey and installed in 1985. It’s the second largest copper sculpture after the Statue of Liberty and is based on the design of Portland’s city seal.

Interstate 5: a snowy Portland-bound car adventure

Yesterday Shannon and her mom Sarah and I left for Portland Oregon! We left at 5:40 am and didn’t arrive until 9:20 pm. It was quite the trip! There was a ton of snow north of Redding in Shasta County and we stopped to buy tire cables (same idea as chains) but luckily we didn’t need to use them. I have hardly even seen snow since High School so I was happily taking pictures outside of the window and took some videos too. Finally around Weed, California the roads were pretty dry and normal, but it still was snowing. Of course I had to take some pics of Weed road signs, since it’s kind of an ongoing joke in California and we drove through it! Our last stop before Oregon was Yreka for lunch and then once we hit Oregon we were surrounded by beautiful trees and happy to be driving in nice weather!

We stopped at a gas station and Sarah went to pump the gas, but a gas guy immediately corrected her and told her that he must pump the gas, and then he washed the windows. He seemed a little irked that we were from California and didn’t really know what was going on, but hey, what can we say? We are new to the whole Oregon thing.

Here are pics from the road trip, most of which were taking from inside of the car:

Shaina skipping stones

8/365: Shaina came and spent the day with me yesterday and she’s never been to my house before. So, we had endless cups of tea, and I took her to the river nearby where I learned she’s a pro at skipping rocks!

San Jose park

4/365: Ran an errand for my dad in San Jose today and ended up on S 1st St. Photo of the day is of a little park in the middle of the street. Each side of the street is one-way with this park in the center separating the two sides. I hope that makes sense…

It’s always interesting when there are all of these nice places to sit and hangout and there is one lone person:
