Return of my Mighty Holga!
In the past I’ve had my Holga 120mm film rolls developed and scanned at the same time from Bay Photo Lab in Santa Cruz. Early this year they stopped processing film altogether, so I had my film developed at Foto Express in downtown San Jose, but opted out paying for digital scans. I decided to invest in a film negative scanner so I can do my own film scans and hopefully scan old slides my family has as well.
The fun thing about my Holga is I don’t take photos with it often, so 1 roll can contain photos from a whole range of events. This first batch of scans are from the same roll but contain images from my first NFL game (Raiders vs. The Bears), a trip to Seattle last February, a local beach outing, and my coworker/friend Ari and I at First Friday in Santa Cruz.
Can you spy the double exposure? ^
From this same roll I also have images from Christmas (2011) and New Years Eve that I’ll be posting in the future!
Quad Cam: Summertime Joy Still Upon Us
Summer has come and gone, but here in California October has only given us hotter weather. Here are some fun beach photos to commemorate that happy summer feeling that has drawn out through this Fall.
These photos were taken with my little 35mm quad camera. It has 4 lenses similar to this which takes 4 pictures in 1 second with 1 click of the shutter. So you end up with 4 images on each negative.
Monterey Bay Aquarium-highlighting the beauty of our bay’s critters
This is a series of photographs from Monterey-most of which take place in the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I’m embarrassed to admit that these were actually from July 2011 and it’s been an ongoing project editing them in different ways with Lightroom. Enjoy!

Emilio’s Baptism
Back in July an old friend of mine asked me to photograph her son’s baptism. I had never been to a baptism before, so it was a neat experience to attend. It was also good low-light photography practice. Patricia looked beautiful, and her son Emilio was well behaved!
I’m mostly posting the live-action candid event photos and leaving the family photos out, but I had to post a photo of Emilio with his proud parents (last photo of the post).
Ava Rose is 2!
I haven’t been taking many noteworthy photos lately, but when Sarah came into town to have a party for her daughter’s 2nd birthday, she requested some photos and I was happy to oblige! Last year I took photos for Ava’s first birthday, and it’s amazing how much she has grown and changed. Check out her hair! I don’t think anyone predicted such light locks!
Ava wasn’t stoked about being photographed–or staying still for that matter–but she’s still cute when she’s grumpy.
Sarah and her boyfriend Shawn: Can you believe how much their striking light green eyes match?
Santa Cruz Harbor Surge Aftermath
This is long overdue, but better late than never. The Santa Cruz Harbor was hit with wave surges on March 11, 2011, after the terrible tsunami in Japan. We experienced nothing in comparison to Japan, but the surges caused an estimated $22.5 million in dock/infrastructure damages. And “at least 18 boats sank and another 100 were damaged by the waves” (abc local news article). There are a lot of clips of the surge on YouTube, but this one and these sum it up pretty well.
My dad has a sailboat in the harbor, so he went down on the day of, but it was ill advised, unsafe, and crowded, so I waited until the next day to go down and take some pictures of the aftermath. By the time I arrived they had already cleaned up a lot of the debris, but you can tell where boats and docks are damaged or missing.
